This includes the specific skill that a librarian\t<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Creates bibliographies, book talks, displays, tutorials, electronic documents, and other special tools to increase access to information resources and to motivate users to use them. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are a number of ways to provide service to the customer and make it easy for them to choose their next book (or video or other library materials).  As a convenience to the customer there are inexpensive ways to promote circulation and give ideas based on themes.  I learned that the idea behind marketing books is to promote circulation and bring awareness to patrons about materials they might not have thought to check out.  Promotions can be tailored to certain demographics or made to appeal to a wider audience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Book Trailer<\/strong><br \/>\nA book trailer is a teaser, something to whet the appetites of the viewers, to tickle their imagination, to pique their curiosity. Video grabs the attention of the viewer like no other medium.  Here is an example of a book trailer I made for <em>Revolver<\/em> written by Marcus Sedgwick.  I chose this particular book because it was nominated for The Michael L. Printz Award in 2011, which annually honors the best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T8Sj9QOus-8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>NOTE:  You can adjust the volume by hovering your mouse over the bottom left-hand side of the video. Created with Movie Maker using royalty free images, and the soundtrack was purchased from Neosounds which specializes in royalty-free music.<\/p>\n<p>Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) gives some good reasons for book trailers, books talks, and book marks as they align with the overall goal of library services which meet the needs of teens. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>advocates extensive and developmentally appropriate library and information services for young adults, ages 12-18<\/li>\n<li>promotes reading and supports the literacy movement<\/li>\n<li>advocates the use of information and communications technologies to provide effective library service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bookmark<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>As part of National Poetry Month in February I made a <a href=\"http:\/\/portfolio.northmanfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Teen_Poetry_Bookmark.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Teen Poetry bookmark<\/a> which could be strategically placed in the teen area to promote poetry books.  The graphics were designed to appeal to teens, and take advantage of the graphic appeal of the book covers.  These books specifically  align with the developmental assets of teens.  The themes deal with sports, identity, and love.  Other resources are listed for teens who may be interested in writing their own poetry and attending poetry slams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Displays<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/portfolio.northmanfamily.com\/?attachment_id=150\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-150\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/portfolio.northmanfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Karate_Display-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Karate_Display\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/portfolio.northmanfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Karate_Display-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/portfolio.northmanfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Karate_Display.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>When I worked with teens at the Mountlake Terrace Library as part of my directed fieldwork we offered a programming event featuring Karate.  I was tasked with making a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northmanfamily.com\/infosavvy\/karate.html\" target=\"_blank\">themed booklist and display<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As the young adults left the karate workshop they walked past the display and saw books relating to the topic of martial arts.  Because this display&#8217;s theme related to their interest they checked many of these books out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Web Pages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nIn order to meet the needs of the students, faculty, and community users of the Media Center at the University of Washington&#8217;s Odegaard Undergraduate Library, I developed a series of web pages which linked to the catalog and made it easy for them to browse our new materials, videos, and music.  These <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.lib.washington.edu\/media_browse\" target=\"_blank\">browse pages <\/a>are developed using a content management system called Lib Guides.  The importance of curating great films together is to make it easy for patrons to choose a film by including a visual representation and linking directly to our collection of films for them to put holds on.  Here is a screenshot of a web page I designed to showcase the <a href=\"http:\/\/portfolio.northmanfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/AFI_Movie_Browse_UW_Webpage.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">American Film Institute&#8217;s Top 100 films<\/a> which are part of the University of Washington Media Center&#8217;s holdings. The importance of including the call number is that patrons can request them at the circulation desk if they are on site, and for patrons viewing from a distance they can easily place a hold through the linked catalog page.  I also created web pages for what is <a href=\"http:\/\/portfolio.northmanfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/New_LIist_UW_Webpage.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">new to our collection<\/a>, which can be updated monthly.  Patrons can easily check which DVDs and CDs have been added to the collection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For The Future<\/strong><br \/>\nI will continue to utilize strong design skills for promoting circulation of materials, whether it is simply displaying books in a prominent part of the library or highlighting specific areas of the collection on a web page.
